Cosmetic OEM products are makeup and skincare products made by a manufacturer but sold under your own private label brand. For example, if you are a salon owner, esthetician, or an online cosmetic product seller, you can build your own cosmetic brand even if you do not own a factory.
However, before getting started, you might need to consider one of the most important questions:
“Which one is better: Organic or Natural Cosmetic products?”
Natural
Natural products are ingredients derived directly from plants or minerals.
Even if you are using just one natural ingredient in a product, you could still brand it as natural. Non synthetic is also regarded as natural since it is a substance that can be taken from mineral or plants.
In general, natural products:
- Have ingredients that come from plants, flowers and mineral origins found in nature
- Contain no genetically modified (GMOs) ingredients
- Contain no parabens, sulfates or other harmful substances
- Contain limited or no petrochemical ingredients
- Never tested on animals
- Manufacturing process retains the integrity of the natural ingredient
Organic
Organic ingredients are from non-genetically modified plants. They don’t use any artificial pesticides or any other toxic synthetic matter. All the ingredients should be extracted and processed naturally.
A product that contains just 1% organic ingredients can use the term ‘organic’, but cannot be certified. So if you want to get your Cosmetic OEM products certified, all ingredients must come from a farm that ensures that:
- No manufactured herbicides or artificial fertilizer is used
- No artificial or synthetic colours, preservatives or chemicals (including parabens and sulphates)
- No routine use of antibiotics
- No GMOs (genetically modified organisms) or growth regulators
- Very limited number of pesticides allowed
- More sustainable land management
So make sure you talk to your OEM manufacturer to find out if you are able to get your private label organically certified.
Synthetic
Synthetic products are made by chemical substances or from ingredients that have been chemically changed.
PETA
PETA stands for People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals. If a product is PETA certified, it means the association has certified that the brand does not test on animals.
Vegan
The products are plant based and contain no animal matter or ingredients derived from animals or dairy.
Cruelty-Free
This means the products are not tested on animals nor do the ingredients contain animal matters.
Now the question is, which one is better for your private label brand?
We truly recommend you to look for OEM manufacturers that can provide natural or organic ingredientes for your products. Stay away from ingredients that contains the likes of poly”, “-eth” or “oxy” as they are synthetic. Moreover, the use of phthalates (artificial fragrances), parabens and sulphates is also a good sign that a product is synthetic.
There are however, some ingredients that may sound artificial, but are totally safe like sodium chloride (salt), mentha piperita (peppermint essential oil) or vitellaria paradoxa (shea butter).
If you have any questions or doubts, feel free to ask your OEM manufacturer, who should be more than happy to assist you.
Finally, keep in mind that natural and organic products are more expensive, and they don’t last as long as products with synthetic ingredients. But by choosing organic and natural cosmetics products, you are:
- Making a conscious and healthy choice to avoid toxic chemicals for your customers
- Creating long term customers
- Helping the environment
- Saying no to animal cruelty and
- Helping your customers get the best possible results for their skin.
Thus it is a good choice to start your private label cosmetics with the best possible ingredients available.
Don’t make any false claims and make sure your OEM manufacturer is really providing natural or organic ingredients. After all, it is your brand name that you are selling.
Remember you are here for the long term, so it’s important to start off on the right foot.
